Japan, recent winner of the Grand Prix de Paris, is one of 20 entries from the Aidan O’Brien stable out of a total of 47 for the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster on September 14.

O’Brien has won the world’s oldest Classic six times, including the last two renewals with Capri and Kew Gardens, and Japan has been installed the 5-2 favourite with the sponsors, ahead of his stablemate Anthony Van Dyck on 11-2.

The latter had Japan back in third when winning the Investec Derby, while Broome, who was just behind in fourth, is a 7-1 shot as the O’Brien stable dominate the early ante-post betting.

Other possibles for the Ballydoyle trainer include Sovereign, the 33-1 winner of the Irish Derby, Constantinople, Sir Dragonet, South Pacific and Pink Dogwood.

John Gosden, who has four St Legers to his credit, has a team of three, headed by Irish Oaks heroine Star Catcher.

The unbeaten Frankel colt Logician and the twice-raced Dubawi filly Promissory are the Newmarket trainer’s other entries, and David Simcock has put in his Bahrain Trophy scorer Spanish Mission.
