DUKE OF FIRENZE has failed to fire over the sharp five furlongs at Goodwood on his last couple of starts, but did post a list-topping speed rating of 115 when finishing fourth to Midsummer Knight over a more galloping five furlongs at Newmarket three outings ago. Granted, the gelding has been more out than in of late, but, back down in class today, and with underfoot conditions likely to suit, looks worthy of an each-way play in this 22-runner sprint handicap.

BRETON ROCK comes into today's contest having posted a list-topping speed rating of 115 over this trip at Goodwood in June, and also has ticks in the important boxes marked track and ground. Successful in this race two seasons ago, but only fifth last year, it will come as no surprise if the gelding bounces back this afternoon, while his best odds of 7-1 with Ladbrokes can be considered fair. My only concern is a predicted modest pace, as he likes to come from the rear to win his races.

LTO Speed: Too Darn Hot 115 Dark Vision 96 Bye Bye Hong Kong 93

TOO DARN HOT first, the rest nowhere, this is likely to be the story of the race is the selection's last time out speed rating of 115 is to be believed and built on this afternoon. That figure came courtesy of his ready success in a seven furlong Group 3 contest at Sandown a fortnight ago, with the form of the race looking solid through the third horse home. Unfortunately the colt's early odds of 1-2 leave little room for our old friend value, but what a runner to watch and savour.

Doncaster 3-35 Group 1 (Class 1) 14f

 Horse  Best  Lto  2nd  3rd  4th  5th  6th

LTO Speed: Dee Ex Bee 115 Proschema 113 Old Persian 113

DEE EX BEE (nap), with solid speed ratings of 121, 117 and 115 to his name, must be the speed pick in this year's William Hill St Leger, while his second to Masar in the Derby at Epsom in June tells us all we need to know about his class. Beaten for speed at the business end on that occasion, and again in other mile and a half races since, the colt is expected to benefit from today's step up in trip, and also from the slightly slower underfoot conditions. Generally available at 14-1 at the time of writing, those odds should be taken.

THE TRADER (nb) disappointed in a Listed contest at Newbury last time out, and is better judged on the list-topping speed rating of 87 he posted when hacking up in a lesser race at Chester on his previous outing. Back down in class this afternoon, and with a pedigree that says this step up to one mile will suit, I'm hopeful the colt can get back to winning ways. Pencilled in odds of 5-1 on the early tissue are another reason to look to get involved.

Doncaster 4-45 Handicap (Class 2) 8f

OSTILIO hasn't done much wrong of late, evidence his victories over a mile at Ascot and Newmarket, and the list-topping speed rating of 116 he posted when finishing second to Regal Reality in a Group 3 contest at Goodwood last time out. Returning to handicap company this afternoon, the colt's chance is there for all to see, but in a competitive five-runner affair he will need to put in another big effort.

Doncaster 5-55 Handicap (Class 2) 12f

 Horse  Best  Lto  2nd  3rd  4th  5th  6th
 Byron Flyer  100  55  87  (23)  50  55  100
 Royal Reserve  96  87  55  89  96  64  (67)
 Star Of The East  92  72  54  64  --  84  (54)

LTO Speed: Royal Reserve 87 Dubawi Prince 85 Highbrow 78

BYRON FLYER posted a couple of big numbers over marathon trips at Chester and Newmarket earlier in the year, but hasn't reached those heights on the clock over shorter distances since. Not that the gelding hasn't been running well of late, as placed efforts at Newmarket and Ascot will testify. However, he is racing over even shorter this afternoon, so will need to step lively if he is to figure at the business end of this Class 2 handicap.
